A journalist is driven mad by the ghost of his great-aunt, a witch killed by a jealous lover in the early 20th century. Seeking rebirth, she uses him to incarnate as his daughter. Once reborn, she embarks on a dark journey to complete her unfinished legacy. In her unquenchable thirst for power, she manipulates all around her, enthralls them with her grey eyes, pits them against each other, and if all else fails, fate lends a hand. As her influence grows, so does her arrogance and isolation. Who will dare to stand against her and at what cost?
In WEAVES OF POWER, set against the backdrop of the rich and powerful in 21st-century Brazil, Tarcisio Lage intricately crafts a tale where politics, magic, and history converge, challenging the very fabric of destiny and power.
“... a marvelous and effervescent novel, which captivates us from the first to the last page, compelling us to read without respite” - Sebastião Salgado
Tarcisio Lage was born in Abaeté, a tiny town in the interior of the state of Minas Gerais. The youngest of ten siblings, he grew up in a strict, almost fundamentalist Catholic household, as was common in Brazil during the 1940s. Initially, he rebelled against the doctrines of the Catholic Church. Later, while attending university in Belo Horizonte, he joined the Communist Party. Now, he rebelled against the military dictatorship that came to power in 1964, participating in the armed struggle against the oppressive regime that remained in power until 1985.
As a journalist, Tarcisio worked for major newspapers in Brazil. In 1970, as the circle around him and his comrades was tightening, he went into exile in Chile. From there, he moved to London and worked for nearly four years with the Brazilian service of the BBC. He then relocated to Bern, where he spent six years at Swiss International Radio, and concluded his journalism career as the head of the Brazilian Section of Radio Nederland in Hilversum.
In addition to ‘The Weaves of Power,’ Tarcisio Lage is the author of three other novels: ‘Os Muros de Jerusalém,’ ‘Eu, Cidade,’ and ‘Uma Bruxa na Janela.’ He has also written children’s books and a collection of stories, ‘O Livro Negro de Lili.’
Tarcisio Lage now resides in the Netherlands, where he continues to write and reflect on his remarkable journey.
